Interview process

Architecture loops open with a resume-led hiring-manager round, then technical rounds that weight micro-architecture design and quantitative performance reasoning. Design and performance carry the most weight (~60% combined), often with numbers on the whiteboard.

    Hiring manager round

    Resume-led screen that also samples design and behavioral signal

    What they ask
    • Walk through your resume, then a micro-arch or modeling project (~70–80%)
    • Your specific role and responsibilities versus the team's
    • A quick pipeline or cache question (~10%)
    • One or two behavioral prompts — ownership, deadlines (~10%)

    Design and trade-offs

    What they ask
    • Pipeline hazards and forwarding
    • Design a cache or branch predictor
    • Out-of-order structures (ROB, rename, RS)
    • Coherence (MESI) and consistency

    Reasoning with numbers

    What they ask
    • Amdahl, CPI, and roofline analysis
    • Cache and TLB math with real miss rates
    • Bottleneck analysis on a workload

How to prepare

  • Resume stories: rehearse a project end to end and lead with your own role, not the team's.
  • Pipelines: be fluent on the classic 5-stage pipeline, hazards, and forwarding.
  • Memory: work out cache, TLB, and predictor designs with real numbers (CPI, miss rates).
  • OoO & coherence: know ROB/rename/reservation stations and MESI.
  • Quantitative: practice Amdahl and roofline bottleneck analysis out loud.
