Silicon & System Validation · Interview Questions
Interview process
Validation loops open with a resume-led hiring-manager round, then technical rounds that weight post-silicon bring-up, lab debug, and turning failures into root causes. Bring-up/debug and failure analysis carry the most weight (~60% combined).
The rounds, in order
5 rounds- 1
Hiring manager round
45–60 min · hiring managerResume-led screen that also samples debug and behavioral signal
What they ask- Walk through your resume, then a bring-up you owned (~70–80%)
- Your specific role and responsibilities versus the team's
- A quick lab or protocol question (~10%)
- One or two behavioral prompts — ownership, deadlines (~10%)
- 2
Bring-up & debug round
45–60 min · onsite panel≈30% weightFirst-silicon reasoning in the lab
What they ask- A first-silicon bring-up plan: power, clocks, resets, interfaces
- Debug a link-training or enumeration failure
- Scope, logic, and protocol analyzer usage
- Pre- versus post-silicon trade-offs
- 3
Failure analysis & automation round
45–60 min · onsite panel≈30% weightRoot cause and coverage
What they ask- Isolate an intermittent failure systematically
- Margining, shmoo, and guardbands
- Characterization across corners
- Test automation (Python) and data logging
- 4
Resume-based round
45–60 min · onsite panel≈20% weightDeep dive on a product you validated
What they ask- End-to-end walkthrough of a bring-up you led
- An escape you found and its impact
- Cross-team debug with design and DV
- Tools and automation you built
- 5
Behavioral round
45 min · hiring manager / peer panel≈20% weightCross-functional debug and ownership
What they ask- A tough escape you found
- Working with design and DV
- A deadline you protected
- Thoughtful questions for the team
How to prepare
- Resume stories: rehearse a bring-up end to end and lead with your own role, not the team's.
- Bring-up: walk a first-silicon plan — power-on, clocks, resets, then interfaces.
- Lab: be comfortable with scope, logic/protocol analyzer, and shmoo/characterization.
- Debug: have a systematic method for intermittent failures (binary search, margining).
- Story: turn a vague failure into a crisp root cause with evidence.
